It was commissioned by the Scottish Government <\/SPAN><SPAN>following the <\/SPAN><SPAN>ban on usage of <\/SPAN><SPAN>the herbicide Asulam<\/SPAN><SPAN>,<\/SPAN><SPAN> <\/SPAN><SPAN>and supported <\/SPAN><SPAN>by the <\/SPAN><A href=\"https://www.gov.scot/groups/bracken-scottish-working-group/\" target=\"_blank\" STYLE=\"text-decoration:underline;\"><SPAN>Scottish Bracken Working Group<\/SPAN><\/A><SPAN> as part of their aim to address key evidence gaps relating to the extent and management of bracken in Scotland.<\/SPAN><SPAN> <\/SPAN><SPAN>The dataset is intended to support monitoring, land management, environmental assessment and future updates of national bracken extent.<\/SPAN><\/P><P><SPAN>The dataset is supplied as two related outputs:<\/SPAN><\/P><UL><LI><P><SPAN STYLE=\"font-weight:bold;\">Bracken Classification<\/SPAN><SPAN>: a binary map identifying areas predicted to contain bracken vegetation.<\/SPAN><\/P><\/LI><LI><P><SPAN STYLE=\"font-weight:bold;\">Bracken Probability<\/SPAN><SPAN>: a continuous raster showing the modelled probability (0-100%) of bracken presence for each 10 m pixel, allowing users to apply alternative thresholds according to their requirements.<\/SPAN><\/P><\/LI><\/UL><P><SPAN>The Bracken Map was <\/SPAN><SPAN>derived using Earth Observation and machine learning techniques applied to 2024 satellite and environmental data.<\/SPAN><SPAN> The model was based on summer and autumn composites of <\/SPAN><SPAN>Sentinel-1 radar imagery<\/SPAN><SPAN> and<\/SPAN><SPAN> Sentinel-2 optical imagery<\/SPAN><SPAN> (NDVI maximum composites)<\/SPAN><SPAN>, elevation and canopy height data, and training data from field surveys and habitat mapping sources.<\/SPAN><\/P><P><SPAN>The final classification achieved an overall accuracy of approximately 85%<\/SPAN><SPAN> (88% recall and 79% precision)<\/SPAN><SPAN> and identified around 208,000 hectares of bracken across Scotland.<\/SPAN><SPAN>  A full methodology can be found in the accompanying technical <\/SPAN><SPAN>documentation:<\/SPAN><SPAN> <\/SPAN><A href=\"https://www.sasa.gov.uk/sites/default/files/Creation_of_a_Scottish_Bracken_Map_-_Final_Report_-_18062026.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" STYLE=\"text-decoration:underline;\"><SPAN>Creation of a Scottish Bracken Map<\/SPAN><\/A><SPAN>.<\/SPAN><\/P><\/DIV><\/DIV><\/DIV>",
