<idPurp>Current definition of prime agricultural land (or "best and most versatile" land) in Scotland based on an amalgamation of classes 1, 2 and 3.1 of the Land Capability for Agriculture (LCA) maps provided by the James Hutton Institute in 2025. The dataset is based on a hybrid product of the 1:250,000 and 1:50,000 LCA maps where the majority of prime land is sourced from the 1:50,000 mapping. The purpose of these maps is to aid planners and agricultural officers in assessing cases made for development and determining priorities in relation to retaining areas of high quality agricultural land.</idPurp>

<statement>This Prime Agricultural Land dataset is derived from the Land Capability for Agriculture (LCA) maps produced in the early 1980s. For a detailed description of how the LCA maps were created please see https://www.hutton.ac.uk/wp-content/uploads/2024/05/LAND-CAPABILITY-CLASSIFICATION-FOR-AGRICULTURE.pdf. Previous versions of the prime land boundary had utilised only the 1:250,000 version of the Land Capability for Agriculture (LCA). The James Hutton Institute, who took ownership of the LCA maps in 2011, produced a hybrid version of the LCA maps combining both scales in 2018 (and revised in 2025). The hybrid dataset uses the more detailed 1:50,000 scale data where it exists in preference to the 1:250,000 scale data as it is seen as the definitive mapped assessment. Digital boundaries of prime agricultural land were then created by aggregating classes 1, 2 and 3.1 of the LCA maps, where:
Class 1 - Land capable of producing a very wide range of crops; and
Class 2 - Land capable of producing a wide range of crops; and
Class 3.1 - Land capable of producing consistently high yields of a narrow range of crops and/or moderate yields of a wider range.
It is recommended that this prime land boundary is used in preference to earlier versions. The majority of the identified prime land is sourced from the 1:50,000 mapping. The mapping of prime land sourced from the 1:250,000 map is limited to north-west of Montrose, Machrihanish, a small area adjacent to the Black Isle, west of Campbeltown and south of Jedburgh.
